- Fresh burrow in ground:
Could be a skunk, opossum or woodchuck.
- Chirping sounds coming from chimney above fireplace:
Likely a mother raccoon with babies.
- Scurrying and running sounds in attic during daytime and at dusk/dawn:
Most likely a mother gray squirrel with litter of young.
- Loud scratching at night, heavy footsteps overhead in attic, scratching on outside of house, gutters, louvers at night, chirping sounds in attic at night:
Sounds like a mother raccoon with babies again.
- See black pellets in piles on floor of attic, they crumble when touched:
Those are bat feces or guano.
- Large piles of feces on roof, about the size of dog feces, piled near chimney:
Evidence of raccoons denning in fireplace chimney flue.

- Thumping sounds on exterior siding after dark and through the night:
Sounds like bats coming and going.
- Squeaking coming from attic, louvers and underneath siding trim during daytime:
Sounds like bats roosting and communicating.
- Black pellets scattered on deck below gable end of house:
You have bats roosting under your rake trim.
- Loud shrieking sounds coming from fireplace chimney usually in August:
You may have chimney swifts with babies. They are birds that nest
inside the chimney flue. They can fly straight up and down.
- Freshly dug holes in the ground about the size to roll a grapefruit in. Obvious
fresh dirt mound around hole:
It could be the work of a skunk, or woodchuck or even a fox.
All of the baby ground dwellers are dispersing now, and digging their
own holes and tunnels.
- Digging all over lawn, small holes acorn sized holes, shallow, just under grass:
This is the grubbing activity of skunks digging up japanese beetle grubs.
